Loggerhead Triathlon has been canceled.
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the cancellation of the Loggerhead Triathlon. We do not take this lightly, and therefore will be completely transparent with you on how we made this decision. Fortunately, we have good news to share as well.
We held onto the hope that we could hold the traditional, in-person Loggerhead Triathlon as long as we could. However, with time it became clear that we could not move forward with that plan. First and foremost, we prioritize the health and safety of our athletes, volunteers, and staff. As Florida continues to be a hot spot for the coronavirus, we believe it would irresponsible to bring that amount of people together.
After this realization, we did extensive research into holding the triathlon virtually. We spoke with other triathlon organizers whom we respect, and they advised us that virtual 5Ks are significantly more successful than virtual triathlons. We began to visualize what we could achieve with a virtual 5K.
You may or may not know that the Loggerhead Triathlon is produced by the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce. Just like every other business, our organization has taken a hit by this crisis. We have had to let go of staff, cut expenses, and get creative to maintain ourselves.
Putting on an event like this, even one that is virtual, is a lot of work for an understaffed organization. When we produce an event, we want to do it right. We are dedicated to the community that has supported Loggerhead Triathlon for 30 years, which is why we are not canceling the triathlon and moving on. We are creating a fresh, new 5K that will be held in October. One that will excite you, satisfy your craving for competition and also strengthen the sense of community that is so prominent in the race world.
More details are to come. We want to emphasize that this decision was not an easy one, and we hope you understand. We will be issuing full refunds for those that registered for the triathlon. This will take about 3 days. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out.
